"Life's Formula"- Sun. April 28, 2024

Many brands have their own special formula. Some are even secret recipes that are guarded with great care. Formulas can also be used as a litmus test. If you don’t practice in the right way or believe a certain way, then you are not a part of us. Too often this litmus test has been used in the church to exclude or separate us from one another. If you don’t sing the right songs, read the right bible, or believe the same way about a particular practice in the church, then you are not one of us. Even Jesus’ own disciples were concerned about someone outside the group who was healing in Jesus’ name, and they asked Jesus if they should stop him. Jesus responded in the Gospel of Mark:

“Do not stop him. For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, for whoever is not against us is for us. Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.” (Mark 9:39-41)

According to Jesus, the formula for life as a disciple of Jesus is to love each other. Because God first loves us, we need to love each other. Love that is shown not just in words but in actions. For where there is love there is no fear.
