DHLC Ministries in Action

December 03, 2025

The reach of the DHLC Sewing Bee stretches far beyond the hum of sewing machines and the cheerful conversations that fill the Fellowship Hall every Tuesday morning. Week after week, this dedicated group gathers to stitch, cut, tie, and create beautiful quilts and handcrafted items—all with the purpose of giving them away. Their annual boutique, held on the second Saturday of November, is the culmination of months of work and fellowship. It’s a day when their creativity becomes a blessing not only to those who purchase their items but even more so to the organizations that receive the proceeds.

This year, Sewing Bee’s impact was felt near and far as they donated an incredible $21,500 to a range of charities. Their generosity supported Sister José Women’s Center, Habitat for Humanity–Veterans, St. Andrew’s Children’s Clinic, Valley Assistance Services, and the LaVonne Johnson Sewing Workshop in Nogales, Mexico. On top of the annual monetary donations, Sewing Bee donates hundreds of handmade items—quilts, blankets, bibs, walker bags, backpacks, and more—to dozens of organizations near and far.

Their reach was especially evident recently when a DHLC member, while volunteering at the St. Andrew’s Cleft Palate Surgery Clinic in Hermosillo, joyfully discovered quilts and special post-surgery clothes made by Sewing Bee being used for children undergoing cleft palate procedures. The staff expressed deep gratitude for the love, care, and consistency of DHLC’s support, sharing how Sewing Bee’s work brings comfort and dignity to the children and families they serve. From local neighbors to communities across the border, the heart of Sewing Bee continues to travel farther than any of them ever imagined.
