Pastor Mike Sager, in his sermon on Saturday, November 15, spoke about receiving a call from God. Carol shares her experience of receiving that call.
My first introduction to Desert Hills Lutheran Church was when Pastor Martin Overson married Rod Smith and me in 2004. We attended the church a few times, but since Rod was not a person who regularly went to church, I didn’t go either.
However, when Rod died in January 2021, I felt lost and realized I needed to find my way back to church. My first inclination was to return to Desert Hills, and I was not disappointed. I was welcomed by several people and began making friends. When it was announced that there would be a new members' class, I knew I had to join. I became a member in October 2021 after graduating from Pastor Ron Glusenkamp’s class. It was a call that I felt truly blessed to receive.
While attending the breakfast for new members, I was asked to join the Finance Committee because of my active involvement in financial matters. After some thought and prayer, I found myself saying, “Yes, of course, I will be a member of the committee.” I believe that God was involved in this decision.
Shortly after that, I felt another call to become a Stephen Minister. This was a significant commitment, requiring extensive study, class time, and a willingness to help others during their times of crisis. Even before I finished the required classes, I was encouraged to become the Team Leader of Stephen Ministry! I’m sure that God was speaking through Cyndi, the leader at the time, and I found it hard to say no. This meant I continued my education by becoming a Stephen Leader, which helped me process the grief of losing my husband.
My calls from God did not stop there. I serve as the Chair of the Audit Committee. I enjoy serving communion twice a month, and most recently, I saw an announcement on the video screen that Jenn needed volunteers to help with the worship services. So now, I serve as an assisting minister when the regulars are unable to perform their duties. I also feel that God has asked me to write this piece.
I have found my home and my place of comfort. Desert Hills Lutheran Church has been a lifesaver for me, and God has always shown me the way. I cannot thank Him enough.
