Serving on the Congregational Council has been a meaningful and faith-shaping experience for me. Over six years of service, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of what it means to lead, to listen, and to support the mission of our church community.
One of my earliest lessons was learning how different council service is from committee work. While committees focus on specific objectives, the council must hold a broader, church-wide perspective. As a council member and committee liaison, my role was to stay informed about committee work without managing it, and to help ensure that all efforts aligned with our congregational goals and mission.
I also learned a great deal about the church’s financial structure and the thoughtful stewardship required to support our ministries. Understanding how resources are funded and allocated gave me a deeper appreciation for the careful planning that sustains our work and allows us to serve faithfully.
The council also plays an important role in caring for the church’s physical space. From planning upgrades to managing capital improvements, this work ensures that our facility remains safe, welcoming, and capable of supporting both current and future ministry.
My time on the council deepened my respect for the role of our pastors. Beyond preaching and teaching, they care for a community with constantly changing needs. They lead with compassion while remaining attentive to what lies ahead and what support will be needed in the future.
I am equally grateful for the staff at Desert Hills. Their knowledge, creativity, and teamwork make a tremendous impact every day. They work seamlessly together, stepping in wherever needed to ensure that the ministry of the church continues to thrive.
Finally, I have developed profound respect for those who serve on the council—both past and present. Council members generously volunteer their time, experience, and insight for the benefit of the congregation, the staff, and the wider community.
As I reflect on my years of service, I recognize that I have gained far more than I have given. I am grateful, humbled, and proud to have been part of this work. This experience has become an important part of my God Story and my ongoing journey of faith.
