New Skills to Supplement their Income

February 20, 2025

The ladies at the LaVonne Johnson Sewing Center in Nogales, Mexico, are filled with enthusiasm and anticipation as they embark on a quilting journey, as shared by Beth Brusius. With twelve participants in the class, each woman is eager to develop new skills that will help supplement her income, ranging from those with two years of sewing experience to eager newcomers. The commitment of church members, including Kathy Vander Wal, Ann Lowery, and Beth, who have traveled to Nogales twice to assist in the quilting process, exemplifies the spirit of support and generosity that is at the core of Desert Hills Lutheran Church’s outreach initiatives. The provision of essential sewing tools, which are often financially out of reach for these women, along with instruction, fabric, and batting, underscores the church's dedication to fostering educational and skills development within both local and global missions. The success of this sewing class serves as a testament to the church's holistic approach, effectively merging spiritual growth with practical support, while nurturing relationships across diverse communities. We invite you to engage with Desert Hills Lutheran Church’s mission and outreach programs, as your involvement is vital in continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.
