Come, See, and Be Healed - Sun, Oct 9, 2022

Sermon Thoughts:

This weekend’s text focuses on one of 22 distinct healing texts we have in the New Testament.  Each of these texts raises a lot of questions in our lives.  Why does one person get healed and another person does not seem to be healed.  How does faith and healing work together?  These texts offer more questions than answers.  In a world that is so full of suffering, pain and death, how does our faith speak into the reality of brokenness we all experience?  Which brings us to the healing of the 10 lepers.  All ten lepers are in the same situation, their disease has caused them to be outcasts in their community and their family.  As they travel about, they must shout out “beware unclean, unclean.”  Their worthiness destroyed, their outlook on life limited.  They are invisible, existing on the edge of society.  It is there that Jesus sees them.  He looks beyond their pain, suffering and brokenness and sees why He has come into the world.  They are adequate because the good news reminds us that we believe in a God that brings life out of death, healing out of brokenness.  This is the Gospel – when we feel at our lowest and most broken, it is then that God sees us and acts.  It is in our brokenness that we are most primed for God’s healing.  We face all life challenges trusting in the hope that God will act.
