"Remembering" - Sat. October 21, 2023

Series: Flourishing Where You Are

Summary

We often hear others telling someone, “Don’t live in the past.” There is a tendency to see remembering the past as something that is wrong or stops us from living in the present. Even in scripture, there are warnings to leave behind the past and press on towards the future. Do we have to forget the past to live faithful lives? The answer is no. Both scripture and science confirm the importance of remembering the past with a sense of gratitude, while not living in the past. There is a difference. God wants us to remember God’s faithfulness in the past so that we might be confident in the present. Jesus tells us to remember the night in which he was betrayed and gave us his body and blood. The apostle Paul wants us to remember who and whom we are as a chosen people and royal priesthood. We remember the past to celebrate and be grateful for God’s faithfulness and love. Remembering the past allows us to connect with the present and have hope for tomorrow.
