Summary
Authority can be a difficult concept to accept. As individuals, we resist people telling us what to do, say, or think. It is important for the people of God to understand the significance of Jesus’ authority. In our lesson this past weekend, Jesus addressed a fundamental question: "Who belongs in God's kingdom?"
For the Jewish leadership, the answer was straightforward. To be part of the chosen people, you had to obey the laws, make sacrifices, and avoid being considered "unclean," among many other requirements. Jesus, however, intentionally offered membership in the kingdom to "sinners." Rather than excluding those who needed the church the most, Jesus assured them that God was still with them in the midst of their struggles. Today, we learn from Jesus' authority as He welcomes everyone into the arms of a caring and compassionate God.
